5 minutes until dawn

For the past 2 months I’ve been craving ambient music for some strange reason.  This is a first for me, I can only guess its the mild gray winter weather hitting us and maybe my deep opiate binges ruining my life.  Ambient I especially dig is the techy based stuff because of its ghostly sterilized white surgical-safe synthetic pads and bass that usually accompany it.  My personal favorite track i have found so far has got to be ‘Will you know where to find me’ by BVDUB.(his site offers free 80min bvdub mixes) This was the last track featured on the Pop Ambient 2010 collection.   The track is over 17 minutes of slow sympathizing chords and evolving  soundscape made mostly of   blissful guitars strumming and haunting voices, reverbed-out until clean and sterile.  I keep on coming back to this one, and personally think its his best track so far.  It sounds like the sunrise if you were in some fantastic weird marble castle courtyard covered in English Ivy, thorny vines with purple flowers all waving in the wind.  It would only make sense in a dream. The castles sparkling marble hallways are matte white and appear to almost glow as the sun rises.  Slowly the track changes from pitch black, to purple, red, to bright orange.  It’s a really beautiful track.

BVDUB- Will You Know Where To Find Me

Malvoeaux

Producer/Dj, Steve Summers will be releasing a few tracks under his alias Malvoeaux in the next few months through Future Times records run by  Maxmillion Dunbar.  Steve’s work as Malvoeaux is straight bad-ass 90’s style filter-house.  High tempo, ultra repetitive and  red hot, each track evolves slowly giving the listener new samples to chew on, and always wanting more.  These tracks have a truly soulful sound and play intentionally hot almost like a bootleg adding to their unique authentic feel.  Its like what Daft Punk’s Homework album would sound like if it was made after a three day weekend cocaine binge.  You can check out Steve Summer’s 7 other alias here.

Super fucked mix 2

our listeners

our listeners

Here’s an old mix Bonz and I made a few years back.  We made this mix together, working alternatively on and off over many different evenings usually while drinking.  This is no’Too Many Dj’s’ mix. The theme for this mix was intentional use of dissonant genres,  unconventional and/or strange virtual mixing techniques(no train wrecks only sailboat wrecks) while keeping  it enjoyable for the listener.  Success! Each track is pretty short and never stays a constant BPM. They seem significantly slower or faster than their beginnings due to the ultra limited program we were using at the time.  The intro is sounds from plugging Super Puzzle Fighter 2 with coins until it crashes.  The entire mix is then sprinkled with sounds from the game although they may be hard to notice.  Its a very silly mix but we like it.  The tracks we chose are all fairly popular and listener accessible.  Each track tends to be the best of its album in our opinions.  We picked through this mix like nit-picking Apes with OCD. Every off-beat thing you hear on this mix was done intentionally.  We have tried three times to make newer mixes done in this style but they end up too ’strange’ and/or simply not this ‘good’ although we’re getting closer.

Sexy AND incomprehensible

01b3

I’ve been on a little bit of a pissy italo kick lately.  All viked out, I decided i am naturally more interested into the ones with the female singer with thick accents and strange English lyrics.  I’m pretty sure most of these italo singers couldn’t even speak English but it seems to be a very validating theme for the genre.  Anyway, the accent sounds sexy and  when its accompanied  by cheesy digital voice samples, heavy voice reverb, regal ass strings, bells or brass synths, and/or anything reminding the listener of castle ball rooms, crystal glass, mirrored platters, gold chandeliers and colors magenta, lime, and blue its a recipe for a italo hit.

the following are good examples of this:

Alba - Only Music Survives

Reverbed assed out piano starts it off in soulful style only achievable by a white person. Think white-soul(khaki shirt unbuttoned, makes you wince a little soul).  Arpeggioed bass and playful support synths are led by synthetic strings. the singers voice sounds distant and delayed.  Chorus has some kind of distortion synth bullshit.  Female voice sounds very filtered like shes singing inside the middle of a cloud or something. Like you can only see her silhouette maybe.  Only Music Survives is about love and the future, just like almost every italo song.. ever.

Big Ben Tribe - Tarzan Loves The Summernight.

This track just fucking rocks, snappy digital samples glitter this track, it sounds sun-bleached and bright from the very start.  Evil whip snapping snares, phat bass, awesome lyrics, wicked breakdown, wet ass tribal shirtless Phil Collins style drums. The song seems to be about some imaginative ideal love fantasy.  Song mentions dragons for some weird reason.

Clock On 5- Take It

Maybe i shouldn’t include this track because it has a male lead, buts so silly I’m leaving it in…  ”Take It’ includes horrible accent and lyrics, playful/childish and confusing style music paired with lyrics solely about making love.  Seems to me like the song should be called ‘Take ME’.  Its catchy and rare-ish i guess. It was probably the Wuss-Pop of its day.  The song reminds me of one of those USA spaceships that you place quarters into and place toddlers in for minute rides, only this one has some shitty 70’s erotic space backdrop painted on velvet.

Fun Fun - Colour My Love (Original Mix)

Dope track all around. Crazy girls sing while flash dancing in unison. who cares if i can’t understand anything they say.  Fun Fun’s produced by Alvaro Ugolini who made Advance’s ‘Take Me To The Top’ previously featured on this blog.  His stuff always rocks.  When they sing ‘colour my love’ its clear that they are saying ‘colour’, and not the American ‘color’.

Fun Fun - Happy Station

This Track is even more energized than ‘Colour My Love’ sounds like a sewing machine just sewing stitching all over some person who’s trying to dance while sweating heavily in brightly coloured flowing clothing. The digital vocal sampling is over the fucking top.  That sewing machine just doesn’t quit stitching over their smiling faces till you can’t even understand what the lyrics are.

Funky Family - Funky Is On

This track an italo ballad or something.  I still can’t understand what is sung in the chorus and refuse to look up lyrics or find any info about this artist or this track.  It’s a pretty dope track though and a good example of bad lyrics and bad accents.  Sounds like some little girl just screaming from the mountain tops while it rains some kind of bright peach coloured rain.  Maybe it sounds like some morning fruit juice commercial.

Helen - Witch

Pretty sick track. Lots of delay and reverb and ‘toms.  The singer is obviously surrounded by chandeliers in some fogged out cave. The ground I’m sure is wet and covered in broken glass slippers and rubber mice.  The signers accent Isn’t too bad in this one, but i personally just can’t catch what shes saying..  probably something about love, or the future, or both.

Sheila B. Devotion -  Your Love Is Good(Remix)

Sheila B. is super cool.  Shes a French singer but her accent is no better than they Italians.  Great lyrics through and through though. Its a bit of a slower track.  I gotta give it to her though..

This track happens to be about love.

Sheila B. Devotion - Misery

The French created existentialism, so it only makes sense they would make an upbeat disco happy ass track about misery.  Lyrics rock and is catchy as hell.  I’m only including this for laughs.

Sylvia Love - Extraterrestrial Lover

You listen to it.  Its awesome, and for some reason difficult to find on the net.  This track actually has nothing to do with the rest.  Its just fucking A+.  I apologize my copy couldn’t be of even better  quality.

Vivien Vee - Destiny

Vivian Vee is super hot and has a awesome voice and can’t speak  English at all.  This is pretty dope track.  Just listen closely, you can almost hear her reading the lyric notes in the booth and not understanding any of it, both nostrils covered in white.

Vivien Vee - Higher

More of her stuff, this particualr track is all ‘castled’ out, as one friend put it.  Marble floors, roaring fire.  Just an awesome track though, it seems just as much about the instrumentation as the singing. her accent makes it what it is though.

Summer and Crepes

'Stick Around!'

'Stick Around!'

So, I’d been working on this pissy minimal house/techno mix for way too long.  I recently decided to take a break from it after becoming exceptionally bored stacking shit on top of shit.  It’s summer, time for another ultra happy mix.  But for who? how about that crew of  hot blonds who work at the Perierra Creperie @ SE 12th and Hawthorne PDX?! I discovered it was one of their birthdays last week and rushed to finish it today as a little gift.  Happy birthday.  This mix uses less tracks than other mixes I’ve made in the past but i actually think it gives it  better consistency and more pronounced  overall motif.  I was going for an electrifying quasi French house sound, but without using any Lifelike tracks.   His tracks are in all French house mixes already.  Anyways this sugar drenched mix is best enjoyed while eating a sugar drenched Crepe.

Like a moth to the light:

I gotta post this Eman track.  I recently heard his track’ Great Mystery’ and thought it was from the late 80’s, but it came out just a year ago.  Deep and classic sounding  house track with slowed down vocals.  The lyrics are what really make this track an instant classic.  Its from  Eman - Truth & progress episode 1.

ah disco sunshine.....

DJ Etbonz and DJ Honeydripper have a disco show every last Friday at Dunes here in Portland called Deep Space Discotech.  Basically they fog machine the shit out of Dunes then give away free little bright LED finger lights to dancers,  and spin disco and house music all night long.  Every month they feature a different DJ.  Last month they featured a DJ from Frisco (SFO) who simply went by Dj Ian Hixx.  A friend of a friend he also writes for a blog called Audio Seduction.  We were lucky enough and were given his latest work, a Disco re-edit of Richard Bear’s Sunshine Hotel.  The DJ friendly, filtered, Lo-Fi and stripped down disco sounds dope, but wait till you hear the climax..

why isn’t Phantom/Ghost more popular?

topps

topps

I am pretty excited to write a post about the German due known as Phantom/Ghost.  They do truly kick ass, and one are one of my top ten all time favorite bands.  (it was agreed writers would not over-boast but they’re that good)

Thies Mynther and Dirk von Lowtzow created their first album back in 2001.  The album is self titled and is poppy danceable electronic beats with almost sing-song lyrics, sung in what sounds like an English not German accent. They released their second album in 2003, titled ‘To Damascus’.  ‘To Damascus’ is more of a sequel to the first album following an almost identical style but moving to even stranger themed songs and less ‘click-pop’.   2006 they released their third album ‘Three’. ‘Three is very different to the previous two. ‘Three’ focuses more on the voice and lyrics of Dirk, and  piano laden tracks of Theis.  Very few of the tracks on Three can be considered electronic, and is some what less accessible than the two prior, although polished and complete like their other LP’s.
For some unknown reason they’ve never really caught on despite their music’s overwhelming accessibility.  Maybe t
hey’re more popular in Germany than here (PDX), but their Myspace page shows less than 2,000 friends.  Maybe their Myspace friend count is arbitrary and just means they just don’t use Myspace often.  Maybe they’re on a smallish record label?   Who  knows.  I have no idea.  All i know is they invoke some of the best emotional feelings in each and every one of their songs brought on mostly from their killer song lyrics, and themes.  Some of their song themes concern mutants facing  judgment day; nervous breakdowns;  Alcatraz; boogie men; ectoplasm; and other upsetting themes, all sung in empathetic, soothing or forgiving style.  Their songs give me a feeling  like I’m getting tucked in before bed as a small child, being reassured their is nothing to be afraid of just before the lights are turned off.  Basically I wanna get you hooked on their stuff, and I’m gonna.

Color-Time Galaxy Dance Mix

3kidscolor1

The above art work was for a web page made in Flash designed when i was 19.  (they kinda look like me and friends?) I was really into River City Ransom at the time.  The site was designed to so the user was able to add flawed code into it.  The output would be like some fucked up, glitchy Nintendo game.  I had many planned ‘filters’.  I was hard at work but tossed the whole plan after seeing stupid Yacht’s video made by PDX’s  E*Rock, owner of Audio Dregs Records.  It’s was like he could read my god damned mind….

I made this mix about 2 years ago in the Spring time.  Made in only a few hours, the mixing is very simple.  Its really more about the ‘feeling’ of this one than the work. The mix was designed so it gets progressively louder the longer you listen.  I just recently found it again it and really dug the tracks, as they fit the weather we’re getting this time of year (PDX).  The first 40 minutes are ultra happy colorful tracks. The second 40 minutes are more spaced out laid back and galactic sounding starting with the Chemical bros. If it were graphed for highs and lows,  it would look like some upside down ‘V’  These are all older tracks but it works.  Basically play this mix in your headphones while bike riding in this delicious sunshine!!! Liquid Sunshine = Squirt soda!

This is one of the simplest if not simplest mixes I’ve made but I had to post something to entice subscribers.

expect newer mixes from us in the future but for now this will have to do for now..

Tinnitus

This one’s crazy sounding.  Microhouse producer Akufen managed to make a microsampled dance album sound like desperately twisting a radio tuner’s knobs same as you would  to crack into some Baskin & Robbin’s office safe.  I first heard Akufen’s first album ‘My Way’ in the now closed Burniside O Zone Records, being played by E*Rock, who i think worked there at the time.  Anyway i had to buy it when i heard it. Its a bit older(2002) but its fucked up and worth re-reporting?  The mastering and kits to me sounds Northern European but i guess Akufen is from Montreal Canada and his real name is Marc Leclair.  He did sample FM stations to make his first album. Its dope/insane.  Just please listen to this one in your headphones, its stereoed the fuck out. Like a clear plastic produce bag being wrapped  around your gad-damn head.  ; P

Akufen - Wet floors

Akufen - Jeep sex
