Archives from month » April, 2009

Like a moth to the light:

I gotta post this Eman track.  I recently heard his track’ Great Mystery’ and thought it was from the late 80’s, but it came out just a year ago.  Deep and classic sounding  house track with slowed down vocals.  The lyrics are what really make this track an instant classic.  Its from  Eman - Truth & progress episode 1.

ah disco sunshine.....

DJ Etbonz and DJ Honeydripper have a disco show every last Friday at Dunes here in Portland called Deep Space Discotech.  Basically they fog machine the shit out of Dunes then give away free little bright LED finger lights to dancers,  and spin disco and house music all night long.  Every month they feature a different DJ.  Last month they featured a DJ from Frisco (SFO) who simply went by Dj Ian Hixx.  A friend of a friend he also writes for a blog called Audio Seduction.  We were lucky enough and were given his latest work, a Disco re-edit of Richard Bear’s Sunshine Hotel.  The DJ friendly, filtered, Lo-Fi and stripped down disco sounds dope, but wait till you hear the climax..

why isn’t Phantom/Ghost more popular?

topps

topps

I am pretty excited to write a post about the German due known as Phantom/Ghost.  They do truly kick ass, and one are one of my top ten all time favorite bands.  (it was agreed writers would not over-boast but they’re that good)

Thies Mynther and Dirk von Lowtzow created their first album back in 2001.  The album is self titled and is poppy danceable electronic beats with almost sing-song lyrics, sung in what sounds like an English not German accent. They released their second album in 2003, titled ‘To Damascus’.  ‘To Damascus’ is more of a sequel to the first album following an almost identical style but moving to even stranger themed songs and less ‘click-pop’.   2006 they released their third album ‘Three’. ‘Three is very different to the previous two. ‘Three’ focuses more on the voice and lyrics of Dirk, and  piano laden tracks of Theis.  Very few of the tracks on Three can be considered electronic, and is some what less accessible than the two prior, although polished and complete like their other LP’s.
For some unknown reason they’ve never really caught on despite their music’s overwhelming accessibility.  Maybe t
hey’re more popular in Germany than here (PDX), but their Myspace page shows less than 2,000 friends.  Maybe their Myspace friend count is arbitrary and just means they just don’t use Myspace often.  Maybe they’re on a smallish record label?   Who  knows.  I have no idea.  All i know is they invoke some of the best emotional feelings in each and every one of their songs brought on mostly from their killer song lyrics, and themes.  Some of their song themes concern mutants facing  judgment day; nervous breakdowns;  Alcatraz; boogie men; ectoplasm; and other upsetting themes, all sung in empathetic, soothing or forgiving style.  Their songs give me a feeling  like I’m getting tucked in before bed as a small child, being reassured their is nothing to be afraid of just before the lights are turned off.  Basically I wanna get you hooked on their stuff, and I’m gonna.

A Night Out With Cut Copy

The Real Cut Copy

The Real Cut Copy

I’m sure many people have posted this already, but who gives a poop!  I wasn’t even aware of it’s existence until a few months ago when my girlfriend (HBz) was house sitting (more like getting paid to party) at her neighbor’s house.  I went over to mess with their stereo and the brightly-colored  80s style cover of the mix caught my eye. I was so shocked, since cut copy is one of my all time favorite obsessions, that I had never heard of A Night Out With Cut Copy. This is a mix for all occasions, whether it be hanging out with friends, dancing at a dance party, or riding your bike. Around 42:00, New Order’s Temptations is kidnapped by The MFA’s The Difference It Makes (Superpitcher remix) in the most magical way possible. So turn that shit UP!!!

Calypso Stoner Disco!!

Hippies do like disco after all

Hippies like disco after all

Here’s an Edit I just worked out. Getting stoned and listening to disco are two favorite pastimes of mine so I was super excited to find this record while out digging a few weeks back. Spark one up and jam this shit out in the sun. I mostly just made it mixable and cut out some vocals that annoyed me.

Casiocity beats make me feel so pretty

Casiocity beats make me feel so pretty

My good friend, long time music collaborator, and electro/idm king of Portland Cassidy Demarco AKA Gouseion just sent me some new tracks to share with you. I originally met Cassidy through his hip-hop group Brokaw which was MC Colin Jones on the vocals and Cassidy on all the music. Brokaw is no longer playing together (RIP), but as long as I’ve known Cassidy he’s always been unbelievably prolific. I’m not sure how many different projects he’s had since I’ve known him but I can think of about ten off the top of my head. These days most of his energy is focused into his main project: Gouseion. This project seemed to surface after a trip to Japan a few years back, where his first record was created. The music is grounded in krunky hip-hop, fucked up IDM, and trashy electro, with elements of teeny bopper pop culture thrown in for good measure. Gouseion now has two full length albums, two EP’s, and five remix mixtapes all released on the label RunRiot. His newest EP titled More Friends For The Fire was just released digitally last week. Here’s a track from that release, this shit goes hard:

Gouseion - Capitalized Braces

I highly recommend you buy this EP.

Here are a few bonus tracks that Cassidy sent me. First, an unreleased track that was used for live performance, most likely only once or twice. This one is very catchy and has some nice 8-bit synths as well as vocal samples of Hannah Montana or some shit:

Gouseion - Facefuk

Here is an out-take from his latest full length release, Nijikon. This track features very moody synth work and rapid fire IDM sequencing.

Gouseion - On My Holodeck

Lastly here’s a nice little bouncy percussive piece which is also an out-take from Nijikon:

Gouseion - Recursive Retour

Big up Cassidy and keep it digital gangsta!

Color-Time Galaxy Dance Mix

The above art work was for a web page made in Flash designed when i was 19.  (they kinda look like me and friends?) I was really into River City Ransom at the time.  The site was designed to so the user was able to add flawed code into it.  The output would be like some fucked up, glitchy Nintendo game.  I had many planned ‘filters’.  I was hard at work but tossed the whole plan after seeing stupid Yacht’s video made by PDX’s  E*Rock, owner of Audio Dregs Records.  It’s was like he could read my god damned mind….

I made this mix about 2 years ago in the Spring time.  Made in only a few hours, the mixing is very simple.  Its really more about the ‘feeling’ of this one than the work. The mix was designed so it gets progressively louder the longer you listen.  I just recently found it again it and really dug the tracks, as they fit the weather we’re getting this time of year (PDX).  The first 40 minutes are ultra happy colorful tracks. The second 40 minutes are more spaced out laid back and galactic sounding starting with the Chemical bros. If it were graphed for highs and lows,  it would look like some upside down ‘V’  These are all older tracks but it works.  Basically play this mix in your headphones while bike riding in this delicious sunshine!!! Liquid Sunshine = Squirt soda!

This is one of the simplest if not simplest mixes I’ve made but I had to post something to entice subscribers.

expect newer mixes from us in the future but for now this will have to do for now..

If you happened to listen to Etbonz‘ awesome “High on Hope” mix post (if you didn’t you should) a few weeks ago you would have subjected your winter soaked brain to some delicious spring citrus soda sounding, beat-thumbing vernal zest. After listening, I felt like I had just coached my way to a Super Bowl victory (think icy Gatorade waterfall). Oh did it feel so nice, but if you are like me, a taste of spring is like a sample of summer. Why be content with a slight raise in temperature when you live in the NW and the spring is about as rainy as the winter? Fortunately for myself, I just got a hold of Calypsoul 70 - Caribbean Soul 1969-1979. The summery mouthwatering tracks taste like melted ice cream drying all over my grubby 4th grade fingers. Now I can comfortably continue my winter depression well into the next season with masochistic Caribbean funk grooves. My lips curled into a smile while the rain streams down my window pane as the vocalist calls to “King Boy on bass” on the track “Independent Bahamas”. Do your self a favor and replay that groov’n bass solo once or twice (think two Adderall instead of one). I added “Freedom in Africa” for an extra sunshine upgrade. Jesus wants my sun-beam for a day-cruise (think Latin for a bad surprise rhyme).

Mac Attack

Magical Musicians

Magical Musicians

I recently picked up this awesome extended version of Little Lies, one of my most beloved Fleetwood Mac songs. It has the same sparkly magic as the original with an added more disco style drum beat and bass synth instead of the original bass guitar. Theirs also some added outro vocals by Nicks along with some vocal sampling and a sweet drum break down about half way through. This song has always taken me to a magical place where everything is OK. I remember working my first job at QFC when I was 16 - 17 which was complete hell. This song would play on the over head radio ocassionally and like I said would make everything ok, even if it was just for a few short minutes. The B side has a dub version as well as a nice little song called Ricky that sounds like it easily could have been on Tango In the night.

I Can’t wait to play this at our next Deepspace Disco night, I’m really curious to see how people will react.  Hopefully they’ll start vomiting magical sparkles.
